I make a crude video Response to the absurdity in section 4 of Familiar Spirits and Possession.

The website I refer to at the end: http://www.neopagan.net/AT_Intro.html

I apologize for the hasty and crude construction of this video. It's finals week and I really only had 30 minutes of time to devote to its construction and publishing. After finals week I may decide to post a much better video response. I encourage discussion.

  • However, servitors are not the only kind of spirits. Spiritual beings are organisms, servitor is just a technology used by modern magicians. Traditionally, humans were taught magick by spirits. An apprentice Shaman would go into the woods and open themselves up psychically. They'd then come back with magickal knowledge and skills without any access to books or mentors. These spirits still exist today and still interact with mankind. However, this is advanced magick.

  • Ok, you're going to have to explain the jargon or explain it more basically. You've lost me on this and I feel like you went out to left field on your own there. Bring the answers back to the original question, Can you point to specific references in D&D source books (those published and licensed by WoTC) that specifically instruct the reader, a real person, how to use magic? If so, then explain how this magic works.

  • ... the increasing of faculties has nothing do with religion, it's a psycho-physiological process of trial and error that requires only a functioning biology and knowledge of how to train one's exercises in a way that harmonizes with the construction of their biology and the way the operational principles of their minds. It's about as relevant to religious dogma as playing baseball.

  • Can you give specific examples from the modern D&D sourcebooks as to where it teaches the using of this force? And why is it referred to as Magick and not Magic? Furthermore, can you back up your claims with a testable hypothesis that this works? Have you yourself experienced this first hand or have you only studied on this subject? If you can show me an example of Magick being directly and intentionally taught to the reader of Dungeons and Dragons books I want to see it so I can test it.

  • s in the 2nd plane.

  • Okay, so i am along with you i do believe that there is no magiks on this planet or whatever ppl consider it. What i would like some help to look into is if there are magiks on the 2nd Plane. (The spirit world) I am a firm believer in the 2nd Plane, in the bible it says specifically that God will take us to Heaven in one swell swoop. (Rapture stuff, another story) But what about all the people who are allready dead? I believe that they are in the 2nd plane. As well i believe that there are magik

  • well they have to make up shit to scare folks from it, my thoughts they are just those who got their character killed off in the first 2 minutes of gameplay and they are still butthurt lol

  • Excellent video. Sure, the editing and sound wasn't top-notch, but you gave one of the more well-reasoned defenses of role-playing games that I've heard in a long time. Thanks!

  • @DarkArckana "from pure experiance, you can actually use the rules of D&D to perform Magickal Ritual" "I haven't played D&D in a looooonnnggg time and even when I did, we tossed the instruction manual and played however we wanted."

  • Of course, this requires the understanding of the significance of myth as it pertains to magick. Myths are symbolic of natural forces and occurances and spells and incantations/spells etc. are specific elements of that mythology put together in a way that corresponds with the natural forces one is using and how the use of those forces relates to the desired change. In other words, mythology is like your spice rack and spells are like the recipes.

  • What jargon did you want me to elaborate on?

  • "... that specifically instruct the reader, a real person, how to use magic?" From pure experience, you can actually use the rules of D&D to perform a Magickal Ritual. You can have "fixed game" in the same manner that a traditional ritual will act out ancient mythologies of their tradition to align their mind with the myth. You use the position of "GM" to create a personal mythology that the characters are following.

  • "Can you point to specific references in D&D source books (those published and licensed by WoTC) that specifically instruct the reader, a real person, how to use magic?" I haven't played D&D in a loooonnnggg time and even when I did, we just tossed the instruction manual and played however we wanted. I recommend reading "Authentic Thaumaturgy" by Isaac Bonewitz. You can dl a free e-book somewhere. Otherwise, I'd have to read the manual before responding to you.
