@osamarama I change my oil at 50km. And then again at 300. And then at 1000. On a new engine. But I agree you should ride it hard right off the bat.

All good points, but keep in mind that red line for an engine in the break-in period is probably lower than the red line after.

Like I said, everyone has their procedure. I went with a slow procedure after I did my winter project (cylinders, pistons, cams, lifter, oil pump, cam plate, etc.) After all those it would be like breaking in a new bike. After the slow break in though, I have no excess oil burn and now blow by. In the end its your money. Break in how you feel. I'm just trying to get 100k out of the build i just did. We'll see.

Everyone has opinions on this topic. For a street vehicle I say use the factory recommended break in procedure. For race vehicles (especially drag), then you can use hard break in. Piston rings are not the only thing being broken in. Concern for correct wear of oil pump components, bearings, really any moving part should be the thought for and engine that you want to see many miles. Honda's factory run is designed for inspection and to help pass some of the assembly lube.

@13mordeth it's the same on 2-strokes as well i ride MX in the 125 and 250 class and i break my bikes in the same in fact i think i'm harder on them brand-new than i am after about 5 to 10 trips to the track

@laurencefrazer treads on tires are there for rain, dirt, and snow. Slick tires are softer and without tread offer the most traction. Only good on dry pavement though. Also wear out very quick. They're suggested for racing only.

@laurencefrazer they're racing slicks
Would breaking in a scooter be the same way?

@ateraxai Any 4 stroke engine should be broken in hard. There is a video on here of a F1 engine being broken in.....they take it up to red line and hold it there. They do the same with expensive car engines before they even leave the factory. They do the same with Goldwings...because they know the owners won't be hard enough on them. Full throttle or no throttle with a new engine. You don't need to go fast.....you just need to accelerate hard to the speed limit and then slow back down, repeat.

@13mordeth do you guys have any bigger race tracks or is that the only one in Taiwan?

@2gcdma We have a "proper" large race track. But like all proper race tracks it costs a lot of money to use it. And this small track is still plenty exciting for me.
