The Sadist (1963) will be released on DVD in the UK on 12th January 2009 by Powis Square Pictures. Certificate 15
Digitally remastered in widescreen, the DVD also features a feature length commentary by Oscar winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond who talks not only of The Sadist but also his much admired career, including his work with Robert Altman and Steven Spielberg.
Starring cult actor Arch Hall Jr, The Sadist is a tense and atmospheric thriller which polarised viewers on its initial release due to its nihilistic violence and uncompromising tone. Shot in real time, it focuses on three people taken hostage by a pair of psychotic teenagers, and was the first film to be influenced by the real life serial killers Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate (the subsequent basis for the characters in Terrence Malick's Badlands and Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers).
Beautifully shot and gripping to the end, The Sadist has long been known only to cult film afficionados and the time is now right for this lost classic of the genre to be rediscovered.
