Lions Clubs International CONTACT NAME and TITLE: Ross Adams, THEME: Decades of Service
Members of Lions Clubs International have displayed their dedication to eliminating preventable blindness through Decades of Service. Founded in 1917 and inspired by Helen Keller at its international convention in 1925, Lions Clubs International continues its "Decades of Service" working with the blind and sight impaired over the years. Its members have expanded their volunteer efforts towards other community service projects, such as conducting medical clinics, collection of used eye glasses, white cane days fundraising, hearing impaired programs, guide dogs (not only for the sight impaired, but expanded to canine companions for independence), Lions flag day, and various youth programs in student exchange and at wilderness camps. A foundation, dedicated to fund raising and distribution of aid for humanitarian needs through programs for youth, disability, health and natural disasters, continues to serve for decades throughout the world. In 2007, the Financial Times, ranked Lions Clubs International Foundation as the number one non-governmental organization (NGO) worldwide with which to work as a service organization.
Individuals and organizations that dedicate their time and energy to serving the needs of others epitomize a commitment that is A Cut Above the Rest.

FLOAT DESCRIPTION:
Height: 16.5 ft.Width: 18 ft.Length: 35 ft.
Lions Clubs International presents a gigantic and colorful calliope to entertain parade viewers. The groups 24th Tournament of Roses entry is highlighted by eye-catching splashes of color, flags, bunting, rotating wheels and especially by rousing music the language understood by the sighted and sightless. Lions Club members have for decades been committed to the elimination of preventable blindness. The clubs International President Eberhard J. Wirfs of Germany and his wife Margit are among the riders on the float.

FLOWERING: The gigantic calliope created with scissor-trimmed yellow and red chrysanthemums, accented with onion seed, and highlighted with a matching pair of decorative sculpted lion heads of golden clover seed, yellow strawflower and fine cut white rice. The bunting at the front of the float and the flowing American flag at the rear of the entry are created with red and white carnation petals and fine cut blue statice, the tassels are created fine cut red strawflower, and there are cascading accents of cymbidium and dendrobium orchids, carnations and roses. The calliope rides on wheels with yellow strawflower spokes and silverleaf treads; hubcaps are decorated with navy beans, ground rice and bronze China mums. The garden of the float is created with roses, daisies and carnations presentations of red, white, purple, bright yellow light lavender, dark lavender, light orange and light orange. Bouquets feature eucalyptus stems and red, orange and yellow gladiolas, roses and carnations.

Lions Club is the largest service club in the world. Participating in the decoration of Lions Clubs Internationals float are blind and visually impaired members of the Leo Club of the Braille Institute. By participating in floral application they are given the opportunity to touch, handle and smell the flowers as they are applied to the float and truly experience the heart of the Tournament of Roses Parade.
