No, you said it gave Liu an unfair advantage because he played with pips. Liu was just always better than Waldner.Pips fit his style, just like how inverted fit Guo Yuehua's style (Guo's coaches forced him to use pips, but he was a very weak hitter, changing to inverted led him to 4 straight World Finals and two wins). Waldner never had a chance, but thats not because he used pips.

  • @takkyu101 As you stated,"The short pips just helped him play his best." In other words, equipment does matter. I rest my case.

  • @dankaren95 YOu speak of Waldner like he is some god and that he only had a "hard time" with Liu. Liu never lost to Waldner until 2000. Liu was just better than Waldner the minute they met (i can think of at least 5 instances in the 90s when Liu beat Walder, including the '95 WTTC, when Liu was only 19). The thing Waldner couldn't do about Liu was the serves. Liu could serve 5 balls and Walder would miss all of them. Liu just outplayed Waldner, the Short pips just helped him play his best.

  • @takkyu101 Are you kidding me? It happens at all levels, and definitely at a lower level. Even Waldner had a hard time with Liu Guoliang, and so did Gatien. A player rubber can be used at his advantage very easily as it can be used to disrupt the speed, the speed, the timing of the ball. If you play pinp-pong, you should understand this very concept, unless you're denying it for some weird reason.

  • @dankaren95

I disagree. Maybe on a lower level, but on National level its rather equal. Liu's short pips were because he was a pure hitter, hitting with inverted is pointless, it has none of the same effect. Short pips were the norm for any penholder of the 80s up until the late 90s (with the exception of Guo Yuehua and Wei Qingguang). The only real junk player even during that time was Cai Zhenhua who used Anti, of course during that time there was no two color rule, anti was more popular.

  • @dankaren95 Unlike most American sports, ping-pong has no size requirement. Perhaps that's why most Asians play it and do it better than everyone else. Therefore, size is not a factor. What's stupid about ping-pong is its inability to standardize equipment. As a result, a not very talented player can easily defeat his more talented opponent with weird rubber. This is seen at the pro level as well. Take Liu Guoliang for example. He was very talented, but his rubber made him even deadlier.

  • @dankaren95

What using the long pips (RITC 755) allowed her to do was control the pace of the rallies, She used the pimples both offensively, but you can see how she makes very well timed blocks to set up that tremendous forehand. She was originally not taken on the Chinese national team because of height only being 4'11'' (back in 1988 when she was only 15). So she had to over come a pretty big height difference between her and almost all of her opponents.

  • Deng Yaping, the best female table tennis player of all time. She had talent, weird equipment, and most importantly her intelligence. If you play ping-pong, you will know that it's tough playing against players who use pips, anti, etc.. You can very easily lose to someone who's not as talented as you are. Therefore, someone who uses these weird rubber automatically has an advantage over you. Deng mastered the use of these, plus great talent, and became so hard to beat.
