Spain has the highest unemployment rate in the eurozone, where nearly one in four citizens do not have a job and roughly half the country's youth are jobless.

As a result, the traditional Christmas lottery has become more popular than ever - becoming a near national obsession.

Many people are hoping that luck will be on their side this festive season in securing el Gordo - the Fat One - a potluck worth an enviable $1bn in prize money.

Al Jazeera's Peter Sharp reports from Madrid.

  • that $50 in lotto tickets isn;t "all she's got" it's $50 out of the mouths of herself and her children. Lotteries are a tax on the poor.

  • When the lotto and other gambling is designed to take money from you...you know what? Forget it! They're completely and utterly asinine. Do what the rest of the sheep are doing, that'll get you somewhere!

  • @WangDugay here in spain football is a religon, and the 2 biggest teams real madrid & barçalona are fabulasly wealthy, that is why they can afford 2 buy just 1 player ronaldo for $120m for example

  • "maybe this time my turn to be rich"

typical poor gambler mentality. pity the kids.

  • Reporter is a fuck shit racist British moron. ..right? Spain is not a part of Anglo-German Europe! Sorry!

  • @Eball06 who are the main underwriters for all the loans Real Madrid takes to pay its palyers? Govt. duh!

  • EL GORDO THE FAT ONE

  • @WangDugay Well, that's a dumb question... Since when did governments start paying footballers.?

  • Given that the Spanish are hurting so badly, why in the name of seven hells did they elect that arch-conservative asshole who is going to make even deeper cuts? Why, well, because they really had no choice. They were forced to choose between 2 candidates both controlled by the same masters, namely the big banks.

Just like, here in the USA, we will be forced to do the same next November, choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledumber, knowing they're both thieves and liars.

  • If they are so piss poor, then how can they afford to pay footballers around +100,000 Euros a week?
