Fractions for regions and sets are introduced with visual models. Through the learning of fractions, students need to be encouraged to describe the meaning of fraction symbols in terms of visual models. A brief history of fractions is given. It is noted that fractions were developed to talk about parts of things and were once called "broken numbers". Because fraction names cause math anxiety, it is suggested that that students use informal names, such as "3 over 5" for "three-fifths" until they become familiar and comfortable with fractions. National test results are cited. Fractions for sets are introduced and connected to the use of fractions for regions. The video ends with a brief view of the free interactive web game "Beat the Clock" from fractionbars.com.
