Sawing a woman in half is a generic name for a number of different stage magic tricks in which a person (traditionally a female assistant) is apparently sawn in half or divided into two.

There remains a debate about the origin of sawing illusions, with some sources saying a magician named Torrini may have performed the first version in front of Pope Pius VII in 1809. It was also suggested during a court case that the trick can be traced back to ancient Egypt. However these claims have not been substantiated.[1][2]

It is generally accepted that the first modern performance of a sawing illusion was achieved by British magician P.T. Selbit in 1921. His trick, which he billed as "Sawing Through A Woman", was significantly different from what a modern audience would expect. Selbit's assistant was locked inside a closed wooden crate and could not be seen, although ropes tied to her hands, feet, and neck were held throughout the illusion by spectators from the audience.[2]

Later the same year, Horace Goldin, a magician working in the United States, presented the first version which modern audiences would recognize. Goldin's assistant lay in a box from which her feet, head and hands protruded. Goldin sawed through the middle of the box, inserting metal sheets to cover the cut ends, and then pushed the two halves a little way apart. This process was then reversed, and the assistant released unharmed. Goldin later developed a sawing illusion that dispensed with boxes and used a large buzzsaw.

  • When he lowers the lid over her legs, notice that the fake feet don't protrude out of the box until the lid is only a few inches from being entirely lowered or closed. Her knees would have been showing and blocking the lid from being lowered at that point if the feet were really hers.

She pulled her legs up alongside her torso, apparently alongside her left side by the way she holds her head a little to the left sometimes while in the box.

  • lol shame i know how it is done (or how it could be done) she is a gymnas and folds her legs up into the top half of the box the legs at the end are pushed out by a mechanism then she un folds her legs and thats it.

  • This Mission Impossible theme song is the same song I listen to on my way to my job at Burger King to get me going and ready for work

  • After seeing 3:20, I think they might have some form of box that's invisible for her to put her legs in. I have seen tricks like that before. They use mirrors to blind the trick on how to do it.

  • @SuperChloeJayde Good eye, I saw it too after reading your comment.

  • Neat trick! What's more impressive is how she can lay like that with her legs under her torso! At 3:20 you can see her climbing out of the first (top) half of the box... Perhaps open both lid before taking her out next time?

  • How the heak is this possible...i want to know

  • No need 4 that Gay dance at the start!!!
