Both method 1 and 2 are free, method 2 is mainly for Vista/7 users, but works on XP too.

You need:
Virtual VCR
DivX
VHScrCap

STEP 1: Download and install all first, then open VirtualVCR and follow the settings I use in the video. I forgot to show the VHScrCap settings, so I'll say it here:

STEP 2: Go to VirtualVCR settings again and go to video, then device settings. VH Screen Capture Driver should pop up, so go to settings on that. UNCHECK "Optimize screen capture" and set your frame rate (I used 30 in this video).

STEP 3: Go to capture on the VH settings window and set your recording area. Check "Show frame" if you want to see where it's recording. The area settings will update in VirtualVCR once you close and click OK on all settings windows.

STEP 4: Compress the video in Windows Movie Maker or other, because it will come out a bit big.

---------OTHER---------
Do not use the MultiCam when choosing a device. It also has a habit of popping up, so what I do to fix that is rename its file.

HOW TO FIX MULTICAM FROM POPPING UP:
Go to d:\program files\hmelyofflabs\vhtoolkit and rename "VHMultiCam.exe" to "STOPPOPPINGUP.exe" or just something different.

IF NO AUDIO IS RECORDING:
Make sure audio capture is on in the options, and your soundcard recording device is set to "stereo mix" or "wave in" or similar. There's other tutorials on that if you can't find it. Also make sure VirtualVCR is set to record from your soundcard and not USB headphones etc.

THE VIDEO HAS FRAME LOSS AFTER UPLOADING:
This is caused by YouTube's new higher quality formats. The older formats like fmt=18 don't do this. I have posted about it in YouTube bug forums.

  • dude... the divx codec fliter thing didnt get installed right into the VirtualVCR...

    little help, please???

  • @pelonproductions I don't know what you did or didn't do, but the only thing I can think of is: if your desktop colors aren't set to 32bit, DivX won't show in the codec list.

  • You have the smoothness, but the HD quality is what we're after. I use camtasia and I'd say if I can improve the frame rate speed to the best it can handle, then I'll be good.

  • With these methods you CAN get both HD and speed. You can manually choose the resolution to record in, but it's not as friendly point-and-click like Camtasia. Recordings done with these methods look nearly lossless, it's efficient in size, quality, and speed.

  • VHScrCap doesn't get detected as a record driver, and as a result I can't record anything. It is definitely installed correctly... what is wrong?

  • Thanks alot ...this is great ... now I can share my ideas created in after effects !!!

  • seriuosly...great tutorial....too good...

  • im sorry i didnt mean it i love you bro great video

  • It works fine when I'm using an Internet browser, but when I minimize the window my desktop doesn't show up, why is this?

  • @hmelyoff Hey, you're the author of the VH stuff, right? I just noticed your comment 1 year later, but anyway, I recommended what I did because VH Capture is/was always buggy for me and records for about 5 seconds then stops but never says it stops. CPU usage etc goes down to 0% and it still says it's recording, and when I watch the video, it didn't record past like 5 seconds. I'd agree if it wasn't for that bug!
