I was able to get 15094 with my E8400 Core2 Duo @3.6GHz
GeForce GTX 260, 4GB DDR 800 Ram. Does this sound about right?

i got 10,000 3Dmarks with my old 9600GT when i overclock it from 650mhz to 720mhz and 400mhz ram to 420mhz, stock it got 8,900 3Dmarks
my new gtx 260 OC edition gets 12,100 3Dmarks

would the 4870 be better than a GTX 260 at 1680x1050 resolution? That's my resolution.

No, the 4870 stays behind the GTX 260 at that resolution at most games.
At higher res it will take over.
