I like the way he sings "Then I saw thousands of millions Crying for this man."

I like Rob Fowler and Dave Burt as Pilate. They are both great actors and they have beautiful voices.

That's why I think Rob Fowler is perfect; he strikes a balance.
During private moments like this he displays vulnerability. However, unlike the 1970 movie version he is outwardly confident. This makes it all the more powerful because, as you said, he loses the control he portrays.
If Pilate just shouts the entire time and is stoic even when he's just had a nightmare that's supposed to completely disarm him, the performance gets stale very quickly and loses its impact. See: 2000 movie version

Yes, he should be dominant.
Being part of God's plan has nothing to do with questioning that.
Roman rulers were usually quite dominant.
He can act like a dominant Roman emperor but we know he was God's toy, he doesn't.
Seeing a man with might lose it has more impact than a pussy crying because he doesn't know which decision to make.
The emotion of a powerfull ruler in distress works more than some soft guy having a bad dream...

Ah, but is Pilate truly a dominant man?
Think about it: Does he ever actually have any say in what happens, or is he just as subject to 'God's' plan as anyone else in the play?
Excellent Pilate; perfectly conveyed the complexity necessary for the part.
