A new initiative to reduce the carbon emissions of the world's comms business, including the internet, has been announced.
The project, called Green Touch, aims to help reduce the carbon emission levels of the IT industry from its current level of 300 million tonnes per year by 1000 per cent.
Bell Labs is spearheading the project and its president, Dr Jeong Kim, says this is a "wake up call to the industry that a clean slate approach is needed".
The firm's research shows it's possible to reduce the industry's impact on the environment but achieving this needs everyone to get onboard.
UK secretary of state for energy and climate change Ed Miliband has given his backing to the project, saying that the IT sector can use technological innovation to curb its carbon footprint.
