Route 66 just north of Towanda, Il.
Usually you can still drive on Route 66 if you can find it. Here there are several stretches of the original road that has banned access. But hey, we needed to make this video, and we needed the road all to ourselves.....so we sorta drove over and around the barricade. The train engineer caught us.

  • I diddn't know that parts of Route 66 were abandoned. In pennsylvania we have the PA turnpike and about 8 miles of it (including two tunnels) were abandoned and left. It is now some sort of bike-at-your-own-risk trail.

  • Some parts of Route 66 are abandoned, some now passing through private property and thus not accessible, and some parts have been paved directly over the old road with modern highways.

Then there are many miles that you can still travel as you pass through unchanged towns, restored towns, or simply nothing but abandoned ghost towns. A little bit of everything. The fun of Route 66 is trying to stay on it. Much of it is noted with "Historic Route 66" markers Maps are available.

  • I once drove east from Tucumcari, NM on Highway 66, and I didn't know that a big stretch of old 66 is no longer paved between Tucumcari and the Texas line. The pavement ended without warning, and I ended up bouncing for quite a long stretch of dirt road. When I got to the Texas border, a sign going the other way read "ROAD CLOSED!" There was no such sign heading east, but I'm glad I drove the old road. I remember riding the road as a child in 1966, when it was paved.

  • I was at this place a long time ago.

  • thats not true route 66 was turned into a 4 lane road but was wiped of the map you can ride on it but theres some abandoned parts that they cut off from the new route 66 i should know im from chicago
