@MyHappyHands: Really, my comment was an out loud thought to myself "hmm, maybe it was the flat hand that threw them off..?" I would have for sure thought you said fish when I started out. :) I do agree with what you said and thats exactly why I love ASL, because of the many ways you create different visuals. @MyHappyHands Maybe when you used your flat hand, swim away, looks like fish. Would using handshape, one (index finger), to show the snake swimming away, be incorrect?

@swedish1muffin: I guess it depends on where you wanted to put the emphasis. The flattened-palm allows me to emphasize HOW the snake was swimming.... visually, it's a cool "shot" the way a snake swims on the water- we KNOW it's a snake, it's been established, so native ASL users wouldn't confuse it with a fish.
If you wanted to use a "1" handshape to show the snake swimming, that would be your personal choice. For me, it removes the FLUIDITY of the movement that DEFINES a snake visually.
