Two Lasius neoniger queens constructing their founding chambers in Habitat Nests. They have just been taken out of hibernation after almost four months and have instantly begun preparing to lay eggs to start their colonies.

  • I have recently caught a few thief ant queens. Would it be more benificial to start them in a test tube or move them right away into a small plaster nest?

  • @bentleyboy72 No, not a plaster nest. It will mold and you will have to figure out how to get the queen and brood out. Go for the test tube setup. :)

  • I have a camponotus penn. and she has already laid one egg. I'm looking up as much info of this species, any helpful hints?

  • @LadyLoita18 Yes, at our website in the FAQ section we recently opened a new Ant Database/Basic Care Sheet section with information on the care of specific species, including C. penn. Check it out! Hopefully you can get a few helpful tips! :) Good luck!

  • Hey AntsCanada!

I recently caught a bunch of these queens today. I guess their nickname 'Labor Day Ants' is pretty accurate.

Do you have any advice for keeping this species in general? I have checked out their FAQ Caresheet on your site.

  • i have recently cought some ants for my ant farm

i cought lots of workers some drones and 2 queens to be.

i am wondering, coz i cant let them out for their first flight, will the queens to be still become queens?

    p.s

i live in australia and your vids are really good:)

  • OH MY GOODNESS!!! WHATS THE NAME OF THIS SONG!?!?!?!

  • @AntsCanada thanks for the info :D

  • dear mikey how did you get the sand inside and not make the glass hard to see through

when i did it made it all dusty and foggy :(

  • @DrJowenz Lasius neoniger is a subspecies of Lasius niger, but they are generally treated like two distinct ants, in much the same way our house dogs are regarded different from dingos in Australia, though technically they are very close relatives if not the same species.

  • @AntsCanada so what is the difference between lasius niger and neoniger? does lasius neoniger still have no sting like our lasius niger in the uk?

  • @AntsCanada thank u for the info!
