For a change of pace, I decided to drag out some swing music. I know what you're thinking...you play all of this rock, why the heck are you playing swing? Well, because it swings! Where else do you get that beat?

The Cherry Poppin' daddies are by far my favorite modern swing band. Every stinking musician in the band can play his butt off, and the singer is as greased up as you can get. Wonderful stuff with a little hard edge to it.

I picked this tune versus "Zoot Suit Riot" because the bass line is exquisite. The punctate notes mixed with the doublets creates a rhythm that I had never heard before this song, and I just HAD to learn it (well, mostly, as in everything I do).

Swing Heil! my fellow LRRGs!

  • If you love the bass line on this Daddies tune, have you heard the bass line on their song "

Flovilla Thatch vs. The Virile Garbageman" on their first album Ferociously Stoned?

  • I have not heard that song, but since you mentioned it, I will give it a listen. Thanks a bunch for the info.

  • just noticed something... u gotta thing for the triangle inlays on guitars dont u :P ;)

  • Yup...triangle inlays or no inlays at all, it seems. I would not know what to do with dots, any more.

  • I LOVE that you at times break away from your core genres posted to share other random groups like the Police, Power Station or CPD. I have a wide range of music that I enjoy from thrash to old be-bop jazz to country to electronica, so to see these variations on your core group of rock performances is highly enjoyable, and furthers my appreciation of your talent. Thanks again for posting these videos of yours, I watch them near-daily like a fiend. ROCK ON MAN!

  • You have my wife to thank for the variety. She turned me on to digging on pop and swing, and when she gets it in her mind that I am supposed to play a tune, then by God I am going to play it. She has a lot of leverage with me. :)

I appreciate the kind words, and I am humbled that you have seen my stuff so much. I'm just a goober playing in his living room, so it still freaks me out that anyone watches me play at all. Needless to say, I am thankful.

    Rock on!

  • That's a heap of crap from someone who hasn't posted any videos of his own. LRRG's performance is a lot better than I aspire to, and sounded pretty damn good to me. Instead of bagging on him why don't you show us how it is supposed to be played? Man up or shove off you troll. LRRG, thanks for the tunes.

  • Amazing playing, man. Truly admirable. Also...

This is just my inner fanboy speaking, but I wouldn't peg Cherry Poppin' Daddies as a swing band. Their albums are far too diverse to place them in any one genre. Have you heard the stuff that wasn't on Zoot Suit Riot?

  • well, amazing, I loved your way to play it.

  • Nice Job!!!

  • Well done. I meet the bass player at Laurelwood Golf Course in Eugene, Ore a few years ago. Cool guy.

  • I shall give it a listen. I have been exposed as a person who only has "Zoot Suit Riot".

  • this blows my mind

  • Dude, you are absolutely fantastic on bass! :D

Big fan of the Daddies, and this is a most excellent cover.
