Pausanias used to be Philip's boy toy at one point, and then he was pushed aside for a younger man. Later on, he got "roughed up" by Attalus and his buddies, and never got any justice from Philip. I suppose in the end he still liked Philip, but couldn't take it anymore? I never really did understand that kiss, or why they had a kiss, but Hephaistion and Alexander had none.
Think of it as the kiss of death. The younger guy was the older guys lover until the older guy passed him off to other men.
