For people like me who prefer "Idiot's Guide" books to textbooks - This episode covers the discovery of the so-called "Lorentz Transformations". These equations, which finally offered a potential answer to the questions raised by the Michelson-Morley experiments, would eventually lead to Einstein's theory of relativity.

  • this explanation is amazing!

  • Replace the train with a boat and light with water waves and you will see where you go wrong with presuppositions. You can't accept as true that which you are trying to prove. You don't need both matter contraction and time dilation just matter conraction, because if the "ruler" contracts the apparent speed differences are resolved.

  • I wonder how a space-time diagram would be drawn with 3 points of view as opposed to the 2 points seen in the film. If nothing else, it'd be arbitrarily interesting.

  • Time dilation is a reality and it´s been demonstrated by an experiment in which a plane was put in flight around the earth at high speeds; when the plane landed the scientists observed that the clocks on that plane registered less amount of flight time than the clocks that were on the earth.

  • what are they traveling through on that graph? what does it represent? spacetime? why is it not called aether anymore? time or perception of time? this seems to show that time dilation is not a reality its just that its percieved that way by different observers.

  • very cool explanation, time is consider a fourth dimension, but lacking a way to show a fourth dimension, real world is reduced as a two dimension and time is the third dimension. THere is not better way to explain how time affects space time.
