Ray Noble and His Orchestra, voc. Al Bowlly - When You've Got A Little Springtime In Your Heart, His Master's Voice 1934

NOTE: The evening of his death on April 17, 1941, Al Bowlly and Jimmy Messene (whose career, like Al's, had also suffered a downturn since the outbreak of World War II) had just given a performance at the Rex Cinema in High Wycombe. Both were offered the opportunity of an overnight stay in the town, but Bowlly opted to take the last train home to his West End flat in Jermyn Street, instead. Bowlly's decision proved to be fatal; he was killed by a German Luftwaffe parachute mine which detonated outside his apartment later that evening. Bowlly's body appeared unmarked: although the massive explosion had not disfigured him, it had blown his bedroom door off its hinges and the impact against his head proved fatal. Bowlly was buried with other bombing victims in a mass grave at the Westminster Cemetery, Uxbridge Road, Hanwell, London, where his name is spelled Albert Alex Bowlly.

  • A friend in faraway Tbilisi played recordings of Al Bowlly to me in the bygone 60s. I've been hooked ever since. My friend wore a bowtie and a fedora, hummed together with Al and loved red wine. He's gone now, like many others swept away by the whirlwind of change. God bless them all, I think of them every day. Thank you.

  • This tremendous song from the depths of the Depression has few peers!!I love Ray Noble and of course the Fabulous AL BOWLLY.Reading into Bowlly;s life is so sad as he truly would have eclipsed his contemporaries.Born of Greek and Lebanese parents he rose to fame in Britain in the 20's& 30's after leaving South Africa. I never knew of him until age 62 and now 3 years later his music is so near and dear!!!!! Talk about Totally FORGOTTEN!!!

  • actually he didnt burn to death, he was found dead but apparently physically unharmed. The bomb fell outside his home and the shock must have killed him. @Memusclebear

  • Has anyone eclipsed Al Bowlly in the years since he died? I don't think so. He's one of those rare people who live on even many years ater their death as in the case of Al. He is, in my opinion, the greatest singer of his genre who ever lived

  • fantastic, i love this era of music.

  • Can anyone recommend a CD compilation that has this song as well as other gems and classics from that era? Thanks in advance!

  • This is pure romanticism

  • @Memusclebear Correction: Bowlly hit his head (or something flew at him) and the resulting blow killed him instantly. There were no marks on his body when they found him.

  • @dholm5058 And I learned of Al just a year ago but, same reaction as you, with a playlist for him with 40 songs so far. I've got 550 playlists for 330 great artists like Al. Then, 111 list let you hear him in the context of the day - a list for every year since 1900, so this now graces the 1934 playlist. Hope you'll stop by! Chuck
