The first month of 2009 sees George Bush depart the Oval Office, leaving his successor,
Barack Obama, with a few issues to deal with: the collapse of the banking system and two wars. Meanwhile the credit crunch has made its impact felt far and wide, bringing the UK, Germany and Japan into recession. With China's growth hit hard, Australia is also beginning to feel the pinch, leading Kevin Rudd to declare it the equivalent of a 'rolling national security crisis'. His response has been substantial government spending at the expense of a 2009 surplus, with the promise of more 'fiscal stimulus' to come...
