Merry Christmas! Natalie Cole sings this song, her beautiful voice sings with passion... I never really 'listened' to the lyrics of this song until I heard it this season, sung by Natalie Cole. The song also was not on my top 10 list of Christmas favorites :-0. I looked up a little imformation about it and found some interesting background, and opinions about it. I never 'saw' this song this way before, and now, I will never see it any differently... [in the lyrics it is 'sun rise, not, 'son rise', thats just my thought on it] I spent many years 'watching the sun rise' from my back yard,- [the 'sun rise' pic. in this clip is one I took years ago from my backyard] These are years I will never forget for many different reasons. Some look on sunsets as most beautiful, looking deeper with thoughts of, the day is finished, it was full... My favorite is the sunrise, as I see it personally as another chance, "hope", to fullfill my purpose of the day... But whenever I hear everyday talk about the 'sun rise', within me I am always reminded of the 'Son rise', Jesus rising, defeating death, which also brings hope to me...
Just some of the info. I found pertaining to The 'Holly and the Ivy', whether its right or wrong, who knows, but, it is the way I percieve this song: 'It made the transition more satisfactorily from a pagan past into the Christian present. It is also said that holly wood was used to construct Christ's cross. [though some soures say dogwood, pine...]The berries the holly bore were once yellow but turned red in remembrance of Christ's blood, whilst the leaves became symbolic of everlasting life.'

  • Come on Christmas!

  • Thank you for this. Natalie's version of this song is the most gorgeous, beautiful, peaceful version of this song that I have ever heard. It has long been one of my favorite Christmas songs, as is her version of it.

  • Whisper -- a little more research and you will see that the ivy stands for the summer and the holly stands for the winter. It's the traditional battle between summer and winter and every season all year -- and much more. You are right about the rising of the SUN. Contact me, I just found you a killer source.
