I wrote this metaphorical song about the cost of ignoring abuse from the perspective of a close friend. The speaker stands at the coffin of a young woman who had asked him for help the night before; the song is not specific about whether she was murdered or took her own life, but the refrain uses imagery of nature to describe the bruising that had been seen on her in life.
Violence is perpetuated in our homes and communities because of an implied contract of silence. If you are involved or know of someone in such a situation, please seek help now. Contact a local domestic violence crisis intervention center, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline (http:www.ndvh.org).
