Its interesting how they can actually detect the texture and colour of the surface strata they are on and change almost immediently. Chromatophores are quite amazing things, especially in octopus's coz theirs is neural so change instantly, chameleons are chemical based so changes are alot slower. Im a scientific journalist, i donE an article on the Blue Ringed Octopus a few weeks back. They go blue rings and with a yellow background about 5 seconds before they attack as a warning. Amazing dudes.
