I first went to Haiti in 1975 with my husband, Bradford Graves. We went during Holy Week - the days between Holy Sunday and Easter - which is also the time of Rara.
We also were able to attend several vodou ceremonies and were permitted to record.
The vodou ceremony we recorded was released on Folkways - VODUN: RADA RITE FOR ERZULIE - HAITI, Folkways FE 4491. 1976 and now available on Smithsonian Folkways.
I returned to Haiti in 1976 and 1977 accompanied by Ramon Perez and we continued to record Rara and this was also released as RARA IN HAITI - GAGA IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC,
Folkways 4531. 1978 - also available now as a CD on Smithsonian Folkways.
I produced a short 15 film on Rara for the Brooklyn Museum/

  • @BGSheritaah nah im ewe it dsnt sound like ewe

  • vodou collection !!! yes papa !!

stop saying voodoo sé vodou yo di wi mézanmi pa kité blan gaté baggay nou fout langèt marenn yo

  • This is a voodoo prayer! Only those belong to voodoo temple know it by heart. When you listen to it, it's a mix of African languages. Since slavery over 200 years ago... Yes, voodoo is not only the religion a nation but also Haiti's story. Soul of haitian people regardless what.

  • the language sounds like Ewe ( one of the ghanians languages)!!

  • well i dont know about that i think haitians are as mixed as all th others caribbeans.being from a mixed familly,i dont agree with most haitians are still pure africans, not that something is wrong with africans but i think we are as mixed as jamaicans or dominicans.

  • This is beautiful, Haitians, Africans, Voudon; all beautiful.

  • It's Hatian. Some of the words are not kreyòl. However, if you had been to some vodou ceremonies in Haiti, you would've known that it's kreyòl.

  • This is not haitian. the language they're speaking is not french or creole.

Mrs. Graves, next time pay SOME attention.

    Merci

  • Looks like gonaives, deduns, and maybe St. Marc

  • your ignorance is making our people look bad voodoo is a traditional faith our ancestors had before we came to the Americas it is one of the only thing we mange to retain since being uprooted from Africa and people like you that base their opinions on Hollywood movies that exaggerate things too make a profit the facts people like you dominate us make me worry for our culture and its existence for future generation
