@thepeteris one could argue that there may in fact be a middle ground between finding it self-affirming and dismissing it as pretentious BS

Every video of yours that I watch is always so eloquent and thoughtful. I admire you for that.

Yeah, I think the way that quote categorizes people is pretty unreasonable. But beyond that, I can't evan imagine how you could begin to separate discussions about people, events, and ideas into three distinct discussion topics. Is it even possible to have a discussion about "people" and exclude "events" and "ideas" from that discussion? I'm not sure it is.
-
I've definitely used this perspective it on different things (like the HP houses) but I've never related it to this quote. I've always looked at it like... the top of one's ability. Great minds are willing and able to discuss ideas, they don't always, but the do. Whereas small minds talk only at the lower levels and are unwilling or unable to go beyond. Like, the use of more intellectual words. I don't always use them, but they are apart of my life, while others may be unable to use them.

@emmfan09 Well, the Ravenclaws are using it to justify elitism and snobbery. The joke's on them though, as they weren't bright enough to understand the quote.
-
@Ravenclaw2313 I totally thought about you and the illustration when I was editing this. :]
-
@raidonthestadiar Idk, man, I think your comment is definitely related to the video! I like your thoughts. But I'd say that you can have interesting conversations about the people affected by a series of events instigated by those realizing their ideas. Wouldn't you?
-
@apandaforamanda I like this. :]
-
@RatherBeSmiling Oh, I agree that it was probably 100 percent about gossip. But that's not what it looks like when it's attached to an image of Ravenclaw, you know?
-
@OpieTheMighty This is TRUE.
-
@shessomickey Hahahaha. <3

We talk about things that are really easy to talk about. Talking about famous people and friends are very easy to talk about. Relationships start with the small minded talk (relationships being friendships) and progress after that.
-
This camera angle makes me feel like I'm sitting in your lap as you talk to me. I like it.
-
fact: great Mimes and small Mimes discuss no one!
-
It's one of those horrible situations where you can neither reject the discussion of ideas OR people because if you reject some ideas, does that mean you'd accidentally reject some important ones? It's like how I back in high school began reading manga from Osamu Tezuka reprints and thought he was the only good artist in that genre but then I found out some other guys did some important work too and good art in manga was still being made today.

@RatherBeSmiling ...The first two parts contain a grain of truth -- just enough to make the aphorism witty -- but I don't expect Roosevelt expected anyone to believe that she really thought that way. They were just the setup lines to the point she was making.
-
Here's what I expect Roosevelt meant: "Gossip is small-minded." Nothing more or less. But she knew that nobody would pay attention if that were actually what she said. I don't know the context of the quote, but I'd bet it was in response to slights or rumours aimed at her or her husband or his government. So, to be memorable, she created a graduated three-part aphorism about great, average and small minds, where the third part, "small minds talk about people", is the punchline...
-
I love going deep into quotes.
-
I like to think of the quotation as meaning that when a big even happens small minded people focus on the people involved, average minded people talk about both the people and the event, and great mind not only discuss the people and the event but also the larger implication of the event on society.
-
I feel like some people do limit themselves as to what "intelligent" things/media they consume, but it isn't to say that they aren't capable of having a conversation about world events or what have you.
-
Idk, man. I mean I would definitely say I'm more analytical than most people, and I think that's just a nerdy thing, that I like conversations to be interesting rather than just pleasant, but I also do believe that thinking hard about things is a good thing for a human beings to do, but in championing thinking one can't help but appear pretentious, so. Is this comment even related to the video? Idk, man.

I would be very curious to know what Eleanor Roosevelt thought of herself living a role where it was important to discuss both people and events. I'd like to think that I discuss all three and that my mind shrinks and grows at random in order to accommodate my wishes (much like the heart of the Grinch). Of course I do spend a far greater time discussing ideas, cause people and events are boring. Also ,I like to think you moved your video frame higher just so I could see the picture. Thanks! =)
What I just said out loud: "Hahaha! Oh, Ryan." <3

@JustMargaret Hahahaha. Imagine that's, like, a common reaction to anything I do/say online/in general. <3

If a culture or society only values the spectacle and not the how it is created, i.e. news but not the cause, politics/other... how can a discourse be held. Although I think this is a much better quote to live by.
“Thinkers think and doers do. But until the thinkers do and the doers think, progress will be just another word in the already overburdened vocabulary by sense.”
― François de La Rochefoucauld
To take ideas and create is, I think the founding of all society. :)

@SolarFire45 GREAT quote. I wish I could've found that when I was thinking of this video.

I have genuinely pondered over this quote time and time again, analyzing what I talk about to see if Eleanor Roosevelt would have liked me. I adore this video (as I adore all of your videos) and this perspective was pretty brilliant if you as me.
