The Tutelo, who originally come from southern Virginia, came to the Ithaca area in the mid-1700s and were adopted by the Cayuga Nation in 1753. The nations largest village, Coroegonel, was set up three miles south of Cayuga Lake, across from Buttermilk Falls.
Coroegonel was destroyed in 1779, when the U.S. Army waged a scorched earth campaign against the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). The Tutelo and other members of the Cayuga Nation were forced to flee. Today, the majority of Tutelo people live in Ohio, Virginia, Missouri, North Carolina and the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada.
