Had Bird played on a different team he couldve easily averaged 30+ points a game. He once scored 60 in a game just to mess with Kevein McHale who had just scored 56 that same week.
Larry was such a great passer and ballhandler and he loved to include everyone and play team basketball but there is no doubt he couldve scored as much as anyone. He was unstoppable.
This game is a good example...he had 41 points 7 rebounds and 7 assists.

Bird blew out his back building his mother's LONG driveway in 1985, and his back started to degenerate since then. He said he should have retired in 1989, but went through extensive physical therapy before each game just so he could play-all so he could get to the finals and meet up with Majic one more time! 1986 was his last physical good year. He had about 7 years of health only, but won 3 MVP's in a row, the last the year after hurting his back.

MJ hate...how disgusting. His Legacy forever stands. cant be changed or discredited.

As much of a MJ as I have been since he was a Tarheel, I must say that I have always loved Larry. Everyone chooses to argue about greatness...I prefer to watch it. 1979-1998 was my favorite era in B ball. This garbage they show now is the pits

Merkingmuffly, do you have the Larry Bird game from
1981 (February 11) where he tells Magic to sit back and watch the show?
-
Yeah Larry had 3 or 4 good years left. Ofcourse Magic had to retire shortly after as well. Both those guys could have won another title had their teams reloaded around them.

I have te book 'Larry Bird: Drive'. I got that in the early 90's. Which one is 'Bird watching: On playing and coaching the game I love' ? Is that his autobiography, and is the info on Jordan landing on his back in 87 in that book? I think I'll check that one out of the library pretty soon, I've been wanting to read it.

It just gets worse and worse. When you factor in all of this, etc., throw in that he had his heels in casts for a year in 89, which mean't his legs got weaker (atrophy) ...we just never saw how amazing he could have been, not that he wasn't already. But just imagine Bird having the overall health that players such as Jordan and Johnson had in their careers. There is no doubt in my mind that everyone on planet earth would consider him the best ever today.
I respect what Jordan did but they didnt destroy the same Laker and Celtic teams. Those teams had grown old and tired by the time the 80s. Bird started having back problems around 1989. He was never the same again after that.
There are things that Jordan could do that Bird couldnt but Bird could do things Mike Couldnt. Larry averaged over 10 rebounds a game for his career.
Bird passing was right on par with Magic`s.
Jordan could be the best but Bird and Magic are right there with him.

That 90s Laker team MJ beat wasn't close to what it was. For one, no Kareem. Two, James Worthy trying to play with a bad high ankle sprain and missed games, 3 Byron Scott injured and missed games. So don't even compare the 80s lakers to this team
