For those of you who do not know what this word means regarding Christ, I wanted to post this to help you understand what exactly the gracious Lord has done.

For those of you who do understand the definition of this word, Paul Washer's comments will strengthen your faith.

For those of you who do not care, may God show mercy to your pathetic, cowardly, ignorant, man-fearing soul.

propitiation (n):

pro·pi·ti·a·tion

\prō-ˌpi-shē-ˈā-shən\

This means the turning away of wrath by an offering. It is similar to expiation but expiation does not carry the nuances involving wrath.

Greek word: ἱλαστήριον hilastērion

defn:
1) relating to an appeasing or expiating, having placating or expiating force, expiatory; a means of appeasing or expiating, a propitiation
1a) used of the cover of the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies, which was sprinkled with the blood of the expiatory victim on the annual day of atonement (this rite signifying that the life of the people, the loss of which they had merited by their sins, was offered to God in the blood as the life of the victim, and that God by this ceremony was appeased and their sins expiated); hence the lid of expiation, the propitiatory
1b) an expiatory sacrifice
1c) a expiatory victim

But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;... Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God has set forth to be a PROPITIATION through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

(Rom 3:21; 24-25)

And he is the PROPITIATION for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
(1Jn 2:2)

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the PROPITIATION for our sins.
(1Jn 4:10)

  • Great video.

    I have a suggestion, though.

I get upset when people post 10 minute clips, but don't link to the full sermon. If you can, try to include the sermonaudio or other link in the movie description. Washer preaches too good to just watch 10 minutes of it!!!!

It is good for a sample, but often I like to go back to and watch the full movie later.

    Thanks!

  • I understand completely and want to remember to do that in the future. I have actually been considering going back to all the videos I've posted and putting "Recommended Reading" for each one (like a book or an article, etc.) I may link to the full sermons then, too. Here's the two in the series for this one for now, though:

    tinyurl(.)com/6qnwzv

I'm not sure which one this clip is from, but it's definitely one of these two.

  • I wonder what happened to Paul that he preached good and than all of a sudden in other videos he started to condemn people for how they dressed.

  • What are you referring to? Perhaps I can help explain, but I'm not sure what you're talking about without a reference.

  • I have just learned more in 10 minutes than I have in 9 years of Christian schools and 5 years in Christian colleges...

  • A very good explanation of propitiation! It's very seldom explained and is often skimmed over. Thanks again Lane for posting so many excellent vids!

  • @TheStyleHammer It is why us reformed people are trying to get the word out on good theology lol

The gospel is the most important of our theology.

  • quite strange paul washer dosent read the entire verse from the proverbs it entirely says "he who (not justify) thats a biased translation ,nobody can justify anyone

Acquitting the guilty and "Condemning the Innocent"--the LORD detests them both, quite strange paul washer dosent say anything about the latter part of the verse ,what paul washer is saying is God has the problem , this is not christian theology nor any central part of the gospel, the gospel is not about justice it is about love

  • @code4u1only With reference to the Doctrines of Trinity and Propitiation and its introduction, the website has the history, why-christians-convert-to-islam

  • @polopowers1 The Doctrine of Trinity was introduced at the first of four councils that determined Christianity today, but because the Catholics at that time would not accept it, it had to be reintroduced 68 years later, at the 2nd council of Nicea. Through the Doctrine of Incarnation, which makes Jesus both God and man, to the Doctrine of Propitiation, or perfect sacrifice, the formulation of all of these doctrines took more than 100 years.

  • @polopowers1 The Christian Doctrines of today were not in existence from the time of Jesus but rather began 325 years later, starting with the Doctrine of the Trinity. The word “trinity” is not found, and Jesus did not refer to himself as God, in any Bible in the world, neither is it in the original Greek and Hebrew languages [these being the original languages that the Bible was written in].

  • @code4u1only I'm not sure I understand you have my first thesis Christ is God but died as a Man only. The trinity is in Genesis. Mary's ( please see my video on the virgin birth polopower1) womb was overwhelmed by God's Spirit. She herself however had no genetic effect on the flesh and blood of Christ. The blood of all men dies. Christ was a man like any man not like any man in everyway no contrdiction.Christ is distinct in flesh and blood. Mary did not pass the sinful nature on to Christ

  • @polopowers1 Is it Jesus then that died on the cross?

When was the concept of trinity introduced in the Bible?

How do you identify with Mary, the mother of Jesus?

Jesus was a man as it is known to all, was carried by his mother, Mary during a normal term of pregnancy and who went through childbirth labor pains, had all the human characteristics and attributes, and then should have ancestors as well, why would all this then not be given due recognition and acceptance?

  • @code4u1only You did not understand my reply. I"m defending the Trinity based on Oneness that Christ did not die as God. God cannot be suspended. Saying Jesus died as God means Father is God without Son.Spirit is God without Son; impossible, all must be. Jesus always God cannot die as God. Most Christions belive in the trinity but cannot defend it when they say Jesus died as God, impossible, He died in body only. God the trinity must always have the three in One never suspended by death.

  • @polopowers1

Christians must believe in the trinity (three in one), how can you say not necessary!

Christians must believe that Jesus was the son of “God” which again refers back to the trinity.

Then you say “His Spirit always being One with God or God died,” this is even more confusing , why the or?

Do you then believe Jesus to be “God” or the son of “God”?

  • @hargisP2 Jesus was not created in human flesh He took upon Himself human flesh. this was the sacrifice , flesh distinct to God.
