The United States Governments through modern history have started more wars than any other single country...and we are supposed to the the champions of freedom and democracy and self governance.
Among other errors...it was the hubris of the English generals who could not admit making a mistake on the timing of the covering artillery...and the blind misguided obedience of the Anzac commanders in not standing up to the English...and thousands killed...for what?
@absoftitanium It is true I was never a soldier and I hope my children never are. I have been an operational policeman for almost thirty years and suffered many injuries and faced death many times in the line of duty. I don't take the threat of risking anyone's life lightly. You may be right, we may all be doomed, but I'd rather go fighting to protect my family than as a slave of some despot. There will always be those who feel that they can take what they wish through force. I choose to defend.
I blame both the politicians and the soldiers for all the wars. 'But without him, How would Hitler have condemned them at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone, He's the one who gives his body As a weapon of the war, And without him all this killing can't go on. He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame, His orders come from far away no more, They come from here and there and you and me, And brothers can't you see, This is not the way we put the end to war.'
@helenlovesjohn Easy for you to say, isn't it? You don't actually have to fight. To me there are no worse cowards than those who send others off to war. The truth is the entire human race is doomed and damned to hell, and one of the primary reasons is the mindset that war ever, ever solved or proved anything worthwhile.
I've never had to face the test and am too old to be conscripted now, but I don't want to live in a world where nothing is worth fighting for. God Bless the men and women with the courage to have the fight.
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them
Lest we forget....
