Alexander Glenfield demonstrates seven styles of Tuvan throat singing, also known as "khoomei." The seven styles demonstrated here include: khoomei, sygyt, dag kargyraa, steppe kargyraa, ezenggileer, khoomei borbanggndyr and chylandyyk.

Please note that the melodies, rhythms, and meters used in these examples deviate from the traditional styles of khoomei in Tuva.

  • U should do "silent night" in kargyrra and/or some other christmas songs

  • @thepuzzler1 I used to do "Amazing Grace" at funerals until the dead starting waking up and eating from the snack table.

  • Coolest guy ever? Maybe!

  • @chadpimp1 No. But thank you. Far from cool. The first day of grade nine I slipped on a PEN and fell directly into the full classroom of my French class. Took me 4 years to get anywhere near the level of teenage normalcy.

  • This is fascinating!! I do wonder if it creates some sort of strain on the throat, or if your speaking voice is changed as a result of this singing. You seem so relieved when you stop singing each time. :-P

  • @lordmusea Been ten years and no perceivable side effects. But any kind of singing can hurt the vocal apparatus if done with the wrong kind of tension. That's why Julie Andrews formed polyps from singing "The Sound of Music."
