Hello on this Friday, the 4th day of May 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline.
Republican presidential hopefuls took the stage yesterday in a debate held at the Ronald Reagan Library in California. The 10 GOP candidates discussed issues like terrorism, the
Iraq war and embryonic stem cell research. Front-runner Rudy Guiliani stood out from his party counterparts, saying it would be ok if the Supreme Court upheld its ruling on abortion rights. He said he hates abortion but respects a woman's right to make a
different choice.
U.S. soldiers have discovered that a girls' school being built north of Baghdad was rigged with explosives. The U.S. military says the plot was uncovered last weekend when troopers found detonating wire across the street from the school. They followed its trail which led to the building. Inside, they found a propane tank filled with explosives beneath the floor. The military believes Al Qaeda was behind this plan. Authorities
intend to question the Iraqis involved in the school's construction.
More than 100 thousand people rallied in Tel Aviv last night calling for an end to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's government. Olmert and Israel's defense minister are
being harshly criticized for their handling of last year's war against Lebanon. The rally drew a mix of secular, religious and moderate Israelis. Olmert is remaining defiant, but his aides argue that a large-scale public protest campaign could bring him down.
Hundreds gathered in Virginia's capital city yesterday to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II. She spoke to the general assembly in Richmond on the first day of her U.S. tour. She expressed her sympathies to all of the people touched by the Virginia Tech
shootings...and also had a private meting with survivors and family members of some of the victims. The queen is heading to Jamestown today to mark the 400th anniversary of the English settlement there.
Thanks for watching today's headline, and don't forget to check out our new special segment called "Police Posers"...a story that shows how impersonating a police officer
may be easier than you think. Have a great weekend.
