A concert called "Baroque Bravura Arias"
on 31 May 2008
conducted by A. Marcon, La Cetra Barockorchester

Vivica Genaux sings Ariodante's "Dopo Notte"

Listen to THIS da capo!!
How fearlessly she goes into the most intricate cadenzas, adds a firework of decorations, ends with her unique trills ... the celebration of true baroque bel canto!

Actually, Vivica Genaux is not visible here. There's another video from 1/2 year later:

************************
Dopo notte, atra e funesta,
splende in Ciel più vago il sole,
e di gioia empie la terra.

Mentre in orrida tempesta
il mio legno è quasi assorto,
giunge in porto,
e'l lido afferra.
************************
After black and gloomy night
the sun shines more radiantly in the sky
and fills the earth with joy.

Whereas in the fearful tempest
my barque was almost enguelfed,
now it has entered harbour
and reached the shore.

  • Extreme mature and great voice, unfortunately

    bad recording!

  • ... poor audio quality, I know. I was somehow shocked that there's no proper rec of Vivica singing nothing less than one of the greatest, most splendid Handel arias in the for me long searched after ultimate interpretation. So I bought a new audio recorder immediately afterwards and now sit around waiting for her to SING IT AGAIN.

  • ME TOO! Can't find it anywhere.

  • I am looking for a score for this, preferably online somewhere in maybe PDF format...

  • haha

  • She sounds excellent... Ms. Genoux has such a wonderful technique, so impressive..

  • I am not discriminating Lorraine's version. Lorraine Hunt's version wasn't bad at all. Her version is almost as close to a castrati voice than Vivica. Vivica had a more darker tone than Lorraine. Now Kasarova on the other hand was way darker than Vivica.

  • I agree- I really don't know how to explain it- but Vivicas version just irks me the wrong way- while Lorraines works just right- its all a matter of taste- it may not be as exciting but they are two different ways of performing this difficult aria

  • Vivica's embellishment were hella better than Lorraine Hunt. Like Crindoro said it's not as exciting and lively as Vivica's.

  • Was I in your place, I'd try by ALL means to get a seat directly before her feet. And then: forget all kind of grief and sorrow as soon as she starts to sing. It's the safest cure I know. Validated and approved many times, already with Vivca's antecessor Farinelli and Philipp V of Spain. Sounds miraculous but it always works.

  • Lorraine Hunt is too slow in this aria.. Vivica makes it sound way more joyous, dymanic and lively
