  • Fantastic tutorial mate... is there any way that you can put a limit on how far the piston top can be moved by the animator? The spring is limited via the blend but can you control the piston top so that even if you continue to pull the z manipulator the piston will only go as far as the distance node allows?

Hope this makes sense mate :)

  • The easiest method is to select the control and open the attribute editor (ctrl +a), there is a rollout section for setting limitations, and you can limit the translate.

I would suggest that once the limits have been set that you put the control in a group so that you can move the group around (for example, if you move the whole vehicle around), which will move the piston, and since the control object is a child of the group its limits will still work even if the group is scaled and rotated

  • hey this is great so far.

    except im stuck at 6:44

to me it sounds like you're saying repeat apparent

but i dont know what that is. can u help me please?

  • select the top shaft then press and hold shift while you select the top pivot, and then press 'p' to parent. do the same for the bottom shaft and pivot

  • Which version of maya are you using? . Because I cant find the the Helix Tool. The version that i have is the 8.5

    Thanks anyway

  • it used to be on the polygon shelf, but if it isn't then it is in the polygon primitives menu (Create > Polygon Primitives > Helix). I don't recall which release it was introduced at, maybe R7, but it is there.

  • You probably found out already. If you double click the edge, the full loop gets selected.

  • It should be there if you go to the menu bar > Create > Polygon Primitives > Helix
