  • Can you guys not hear well or something? The commentator says 165 yards at the beginning. THERE IS A TYPO IN THE TITLE.

And that's 165 yards with a 6 iron that would be lofted more like a modern-day 7 iron. Not to mention the horrible golf balls they had to play with. Snead could bust it. Anyone who says Snead was "short" needs their head examined.

  • Ask yourself:

145 yards from the hole, would I rather hit a 6 iron to 8 foot or a wedge to 25 foot? If your answer is the latter then youre playing the wrong game!!

  • @drewster85 Hogan hit it long, Jack hit it long, Snead hit it long, Nelson hit it long, Jones hit it long, Palmer hit it long, Player hit it long, Boros hit it long, Daly hit it long, Tiger hit it long.

I'm not saying that's all that matters, but if you talk about something like majors you have to realize one thing: the major venues are designed to be LONG.

  • It's not how, it's how many. This guy could play.

  • @Daniel39363 Todays 7 iron has the loft of those days 6 irons maybe 5 iron if you consider the ball he was using.

  • Uphill

  • @drewster85 Finally, in Jody Vasquez's book, he talks about Hogan handing him an 8-iron. He proceeds to hit at a target 145 yards away and flies it 160+ yards. He looked over at Ben Hogan and he said:

"That was fine, but they went too far. You can't hit an 8-iron that far and play golf."

Goes to show the possible mentality of his generation.

  • @drewster85 In addition, they used very spinny balata balls. The harder you hit a ball for a given club, the more spin you will put on the ball. At some point this might cause ballooning issues. Those balls get out of round as well when you put a smack on it. They aren't the durable, aerodynamically tested, computer calculated dimpled balls you have today. I don't even know why I'm making this argument because people who make statements like I hit my 6 iron "x" yards probably won't don't get it.

  • @drewster85 People don't seem to understand that it doesn't matter what # is on the sole of the club. According to a book, Snead has driven the ball 410 yards to a green twice before (granted with helping wind), and could otherwise hit 300 with regularity. Just because you hit say an 8 iron to 165 yards, it doesn't mean you use it every time that's the yardage left. There's other things to consider like trajectory and how you want to ball to stop/roll into the green.

  • @theonlydode good for him. How many majors did he win again? oh yeah thats right. 0
