I would say Progressivism is a lesser evil than an ideology stressing cultural superiority, Christofascism, Oligarchial monopolies with vast political powers and great freedom to exploit anyone they like, Social Darwinism with an unregulated free market, the abandonment of the poor and unhealthy to their fates, ultraconservative values that emphasize women as baby factories, and Moral Absolutism that does not allow any action not permitted by the Bible. Really, is that good?

@DanzHanzen: Before 1912, the GOP was the progressive party. The abolitionists and those who enacted reconstruction certainly had a progressive agenda! Theodore Roosevelt encouraged the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Under Taft, the GOP shifted to the right. DEM Progressives like FDR brought us Social Security. Harry Truman integrated the military. LBJ got the Civil Rights Act passed. Indeed, after 1964, the GOP happily welcomed alienated southern racists!

Progressives did not end slavery. I doubt they would have been abolitionists especially since they believed that blacks were inferior and supported eugenics. They also did not end Jim Crow, in fact Woodrow Wilson brought Jim Crow to Washington. FDR interned Japanese Americans. Sanger and PP was racist. Their biggest accomplishment seems to be the infiltration into academia and rewriting of history to take credit for things they were against but which turned out to be favorable later on.

American Progressives are evil! They ended slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, the oppression of women, child labor and child prostitution, broke up corporate monopolies, led America's war effort against fascism, brought electricity and phone service to rural America when the private sector said, "NO!" They brought a majority of Americans into the middle class by supporting unions and creating social security, medicare, medicaid, food stamps, work place safety, food and drug safety, etc., etc. EVIL!
