The fifth episode of season 1, "Three Men and Adena" is considered by many to be the finest hour of not only Homicide: Life on the Street, but television in general. In this episode, Bayliss and Pembleton have only twelve hours to break Risley Tucker, a man they believe killed eleven-year-old Adena Watson. This is young Bayliss's first case as a Homicide detective, and it haunts him throughout the rest of the series.

  • Homicide:Life on the street is the best cop show ever.

  • Oh man, I had forgotten how much I loved the original opening credits. They weren't flashy or Hollywoodish, but they were artistic and kinda creepy. Little details like that made the show awesome.

  • the final season was nbcs fault but still had a ton of awesome stuff

  • Terrific. Frank and Tim could never get Moses Gunn's character to confess though they believed him to be guilty. It turned out that no one was ever convicted for the murder of the little girl which happens in real life homicides. Extremely well-written and acted police drama.

  • According to Wikipedia, *real* police units use this episode of Homicide to train detectives in methods of interrogation! How cool.

  • Just re-watched this episode on DVD for first time in 10 years. Even more intense than I remembered. Incredible acting from all three men. And this case would continue to haunt poor Bayliss for the length of the series. I love the sequel episode "Requiem for Adena" in the 4th season.

  • Btw for anybody who wants to know, the song playing at the beginning (on the TV) is "Surround" by Bleach! :)

  • It's a shame that NYPD Blue got all the attention in the early 90s because Homicide was so much better -- the writing, acting, and character development was so much better.

This episode is particularly great, deservedly winning an Emmy (and I think a lot of other awards) for Tom Fontana, who basically ran the show throughout its run (until he left to do Oz and the show slipped).

  • three men and adina

  • @calahann totally agree with you

  • Best episod EVER in ANY tv show...

  • This show was terrific for 6 of its 7 seasons. The final season was a sellout.
