"Make It Easy On Yourself" was one of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's earliest compositions as a songwriting team, and although they first had Dionne Warwick record the song, the record company decided not to release it. Dionne's demo was played for Jerry Butler who was now separated from The Impressions and going solo. He immediately flew to New York to record the song with exactly the same arrangement with Bacharach and David. This chain of events miffed Dionne Warwick who was consoled by Burt Bacharach and Hal David with the promise of a song of equal quality for her. Dionne's angry response to them, "Don't make me over, man", ended up being the inspiration for her first hit recording ("Don't Make Me Over"). Jerry Butler's "Make It Easy On Yourself" peaked at #20 during the summer of 1962.

  • This song goes for my gut everytime I hear it. What talent, what soul, what depth of feeling. This song brings back too many bad, bad memories.

  • They call him "THE ICE MAN" because his style of singing is so cool!

  • Touching the nerve..... great feeling.

  • Lord what happened to men who sing like this?? Hard to keep a dry eye.

  • When Jerry would do this song on the Chittlin circuit, very few dry eyes in the house. I've seen the writer of this song teary eyed doing this classic. The genius of Mr. Bacharach! Where is the quality screen writers and film gods? Why hasn't the body of this mans work and life been filmed in some qualitative form. I think we're living in a ghost town or desert when it comes to great musical documentaries or oratorios.I pray they come back to life.Spent to much time on junk? What happened?

  • Thanks Gwen....I just LOVE this man!!!!

  • Jerry is now a politician. Jerry, please don't stop singing.

  • Wow ! This is the cover to listen to.
