Appletree Theatre was a recording project of Terrence Boylan and his brother John. A combination of weird stoned theatre pieces, light psychedelic numbers and music parody, the album "Playback" was released in 1968 by Verve Records. John Lennon told Disc magazine that it was one of his favorites that year, and it's easy to see why the combination of humorous studio hokum and melodic psych pop would have appealed to the iconoclastic Beatle. Although it was Appletree Theatre's only album, Terrence Boylan has remained active in music, making many solo albums, while John is known for producing some of the biggest names in rock, including Boston and The Eagles (but don't hold that against him). The album can be purchased from terrence's website at http://www.terenceboylan.com/ Well worth your hard-earned bucks.

  • One of the greatest albums of all time. I played this masterpiece religiously on the radio in the US in the summers of 1968 & 1969 on my Man of Constant Sorrow program FOCUS COLLAGE, which you can hear & read more about on my website midnightdread.

A friend bought it on a whim at a K Mart-like outlet. I never saw another copy anywhere. Listeners couldn't find it either. Up there with Pepper, Tim Buckley's Goodbye & Hello & Brian Wilson's SMiLE as the greatest 'pop' lp ever.

  • Great song of course but thank you for making such a beautiful video too, which does You Tube great credit. :)

  • The Appletree Theatre was in actuality an L.A. studio project and the brainchild of brothers John and Terry Boylan. The siblings, originally from New York City, relocated to Los Angeles, CA in the late 1960s where their project was supported by a huge assortment of local session musicians including notable jazz guitarists Larry Coryell and Eric Gale.

  • Never heard of them before but damn, thats terrific! Glad I clicked on that!
