The terrible suffering of Kar-kee aka Shadow
Last tuesday on the 18th, Mira called me to say she found a kitten hiding in the shoe-cabinet outside her flat. That morning I too had trapped a siamese-cross female wearing a collar. I sent an SOS to Phylllis and Vincent, the pet taxi guy came to pick both the female and kitten at about 11.30am. The kitten is a male tabby. Very friendly but wobbly with emaciated muscles over both hip and limping on his left hind leg. He would flop down after just a few steps.
I had hoped that Phyllis would be able to restore Kar-kee back to health with her "miracle" massage with eggs and some herbal wine as she did with a limping Calico kitten Carol found at her block almost a year ago. This calico was called Parker and she found a wonderful home through Phyllis.
I called Phyllis this evening at about 6pm to get an update on Kar-kee and Tuti (the siamese-cross) and heard a story of great love and great suffering.
Phyllis said both cats were very adorable (Tuti had refused to be litter-trained until Phyllis filled the litter-bin with soil! She will slowly mix the soil with feline pine to "wean" and "win" her over.
Then she told me of what her love for Kar-kee had made her do.
She brought him to a few vets, including Animal Recovery Clinic and also Companion Animal Clinic.
Xrays revealed the terrible sufferings this trusting little kitten had gone through. The bones in the front paws were shattered. The left hip was also badly shattered resulting in the limping and weakness.
Phyllis said that the person who did this on Kar-kee, whom she had renamed Shadow, had also trimmed off his whiskers. I then took a closer look at the photos of him on the day he was found and yes, indeed the whiskers were trimmed. I saw a program on the Animal Planet in which a man was fined for cruelty when he burnt the whiskers of a cat!
Phyllis was given options ranging from euthanasia to sending him to Australia for extensive surgery and rehabilitation.
She decided on taking the chance with a vet at the Companion Animal Clinic.
On Wednesday, Shadow will go on the surgery table and a prosthesis will be inserted into his left hip to allow him to walk more normally and carry out his "business" in the litter-bin. The vet said this surgery would "buy" him a few years of good quality life.
