Michael Killen asks Marion O'Leary of the Carnegie Institute for Science about the need to obtain better information on what is happening to the worlds great forests. Greg Assner heads a project with Carnegie's Department of Global Ecology and Google that makes satellite imagery of the worlds forest more accessible to researchers and governments. But Carnegie recognizes that more detail is needed then what satellites can provide.
The next step is to use aerial vehicles to take high resolution images and compile them into 3D maps. This will vastly improve the ability to assess the entire state of the environment by being able identify things like the species and health of trees as well as illegal logging operations deep in the forest.
