Stephen Collins Foster (July 4, 1826 -- January 13, 1864), known as the "father of American music", was the pre-eminent songwriter in the United States of the 19th century. His songs — such as "Oh! Wow, what a fine comment, accepted in the same spirit! I especially like the "gentleness" to which you allude here. At the moment, working on "Hard Times, Come Again No More" I find myself proclaiming Foster a true-genius in the unique way he wove nostalgic lyrics together with a melody you simply cannot forget.
