The opening of The Linus the Lionhearted Show, as seen during it's first season on CBS-TV. I combined black and white segments from the longer version of the opening with the color segments from the shorter version of the opening to create this video. Linus the Lionhearted premiered on CBS-TV September 26, 1964, and moved to ABC-TV in September, 1966. It was based on the characters that appeared at the time on the boxes of Post breakfast cereals.

  • By 1969, though, the Federal Trade Commission ruled that cartoon characters starring in their own series could not "shill" for their sponsors anymore. "LINUS" became a casualty of that.

  • General Foods controlled the entire "package" (that's why all the characters were featured on their cereal boxes); they wanted their own successful weekly cartoon show like the ones Kellogg's ["HUCKLEBERRY HOUND", QUICK DRAW McGRAW"] and General Mills "'ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS", "KING LEONARDO AND HIS SHORT SUBJECTS"] sponsored- and they got it.

  • I remember sugar bear sounded like Dean Martin

  • This show had better animation than usual for the time because the whole thing was essentially an advertisement for breakfast cereals.

In fact, I think it inspired a ban on such programming, but any such ban has been either weakened or ignored, since most children's shows are no based on licensed properties.

  • I'm not old enough to have seen this cartoon on TV. Good editing job, although it was distracting to see changes from grayscale to color and back.

  • This complete opening was unseen here in Brazil, the same happened with the original opening & closing credits of "Huckleberry Hound"; the original opening with Cornelius the Rooster and the original closing with Snap, Crackle and Pop; Smaxey the Seal; Tony the Tiger and Son & Sugar Pops Pete were never seen here. Only the syndicated version of the opening with Huckleberry Hound and the syndicated version of the closing, with Chopper, Yakky Doodle, Hokey Wolf and Ding A Ling.

  • I remember this show from when i was five because i had a Linus talking puppet.Always was excited to see his balloon in the Macys Thanksgiving day parade.

  • Thank you so much for editing this together for us. Good job.
