yh bbnvest is right, i practice shotokan as well and the deep stances would be used for kata or kion in order to strengthen your leg muscles in kumite, however, you would simply have your legs a bit more than shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent
I agree. It is a shame to see people who are convinced that they know all there is to know about karate after training with one dojo for a period of time. Lots of ignorant responses here, this is ippon kumite everybody, a demonstration, for practicing form and technique.
And like you said , bbnvest101, "If you restrict your training to "the way we do it", then you are restricting your Karate ".
Open your mind to any posibility, only then can you be a true karate warrior
Unfortunately some of the comments show a lack of understanding about Karate. Deep stances are used for training purposes only - ever see any Shotokan practitioners in deep stances in kumite competition? And this is ju ippon - semi-free combat. All the attacks are chudan - the defender can block and counter as they please. If you restrict your training to "the way we do it", then you are restricting your Karate.
For those who don't think this is Shotokan---I'm a Shotokan practitioner, and believe that it is in fact Shotokan. However, I feel that the quality of the practitioners is rather low, and that they aren't practicing a very "traditional" form of Shotokan. They stand VERY upright, more like TKD fighters, have very limited hip rotation, and very loose, often sloppy and inaccurate technique, particularly for Shotokan black belts. It may not look like Shotokan because of this poor execution.
The distance, speed and strength should have nothing to do with it. Its the techniques and applications that should tell you what it is or isnt. Shotokan covers all strengths, speeds, and distances.
I also Agree, this is not the style Shotokan trains in. It is far stronger and faster.SKIF,JKA,YAHARA SENSEI DOJO,ACAI SENSEI DOJO,ABE SENSEI AND MANY MORE

Doesn't look like Shotokan to me. It's much slower, lacks the strength and the distances are very short.
