  • Question: what even in theory would sort of be "beyond the real", "where the French thinkers dare not go" as you say? The real seems to be that which is not (yet) signified (an uncatalogued bacterium for instance), and then when signified (named) it enters the symbolic. This seems to be pretty coherent - what else is left that would require something "beyond the real" to account for it? You might call "beyond the real", "god", but the question is what is there to explain that we need it for?

  • it's conjecture, man, of course you can look at the real as that not yet "reduced" to language, but the real is also a language, for the void, God, the collective unconscious, it's welded to our perception. I guess I'm talking about hallucinatory visions.

  • You fell on yer knees before the Five-pointed star of Jung?? oh, man...that's too bad! Do u really think you got Lacan figured out? Isn't this a bit hasty? Just a thought.

  • You are right about that... hasty. I was learning about Lacan as I made this movie, and had this knee jerk Jungian reaction to the whole "unconscious is structured like a language" thing. The more I've learned the more I learn Jung and Lacan are by no means at odds with each other... just different insights in and around the same bunch of gray, slimy shiite we call a brain.

  • It's a good thing u made this movie Big :) I for one liked it a lot. I am struggling through Lacanian jungle myself and Found that Zizek is a big help here. He throws in alot of Marx and Hegel and all kinds of other stuff but methinks he understands Lacan better than any one else. Highly recommend it! May be you'll make another Lacanian flick soon! Cheers,

  • yeah, I got into Zizek AFTER making this film, when it did dawn on me that I was only beginning to understand Lacan... but I never would have even tried without it. A sequel would be good, though.

  • desert of the real, the gaze....ditto @eenblanke re: Zizek =)

You might also enjoy "Andrei Codrescu lecture on surrealism and the suggestions of the unconsciousness." on archive [dot] org surrealist take on Lacan would be funny. or ... not. =P

  • very entertaining- and I learned one thing- for Lacan, the phalus is an idea, rather than a dick. - I am wondering how the {experimental pyscholigists/ Chomskian inatists/ American school psycologists/ modern linguistic mainstream} guys interact with Structuralists and Lacanians?

  • dood seriously i had a dream with a chick on the beach kind of like this one...and it's funny that right at that point the word "JUNGIAN" jumps off the screen...because i was actually reading "man and his symbols" during this time..

  • You fucking suck and your videos are not funny.

  • Liked the Zizekian lo-cultural appropriation of Pacman though. I wonder how many of HIS students' ideas he steals...

  • Freaky, just how I like it.

I have to see this again!

  • The music at 7:47 sounds like Putty Root

  • Great conclusion.

I like the way you filmed this film introspectively, as in, the thoughts that go through your mind, stream-of-thought style. You wouldve had Joyce on the edge of his seat.

Also good is the question: is there something beyond the Lacanian Real? Great stuff to think about.

    Cheers.
