  • @hth2mil I spoke with one of the designers and they said the original one by Bell in the 60's could fly for 21 seconds. This one, 33 seconds. It's based on Navy torpedo motors that use hydrogen peroxide blown over a silver screen as catalyst, under high pressure...I think they use a nitrogen tank. The pure peroxide turns into high pressure steam when it touches the silver screen mesh. They key to the whole thing is that silver coated screen. Get it wrong and the silver comes off and it quits.

  • 41 years and probably a few million dollars later this is still a novelty. The military apparently didn't think it was worth it (probably for lack of stealth) or it would be pretty common today.
