Watch how Westminster Council's Highway Robbery Department makes use of confusing signs to mug motorist's in Lower James St, off Golden Sq in Soho. Not only that but the Traffic Management Order shows they are fining drivers for taking the ONLY LEGAL ROUTE!The vast majority of motorists, including Police and WCC's own drivers, have no idea they can only turn left at this junction and that going straight ahead will cost them £120. At one time, only right turns were prohibited, but the change combined with bewildering signs is a licence to print money. Rather than solve the problem with clear signs, they prefer to employ expensive technology to to rob us. The Highway Robbery Department now has seven of these mobile cash machines, soon to become even more devastating with the addition of automatic number plate recognition for drive-by muggings. UPDATE: VICTORY!

From Westminster City Council's press office...

Martin Low, Westminster's city commissioner for transportation, said: "We work hard to ensure our roads have clear and relevant signs and markings and I'd like to thank Westminster's enthusiastic local parking campaigners for assisting us by bringing this matter to our attention.

"We acknowledge the road signs at this location are not as clear as they should be and we are currently reviewing them. We have suspended moving traffic enforcement on this particular cross roads."

  • The Traffic Management Order shows they are fining drivers for taking the ONLY LEGAL ROUTE! It turns out you can go straight on but NOT turn right! If anyone needs a copy PM me. See also threads on NoToMob web site

  • Please re-post, link, Tweet, use YouTube bulletins, favourite it, email or otherwise circulate this! Pass it on to journos. If everyone who has viewed this so far did so, 1,400 people would have spread the word!

If you do nothing else and you support this. Pass this on to as many people as you can. It WILL make a difference!

  • What has the council to say about this ? have they been asked / cornered

  • @antipike Oh, they will be ;-) I suspect their in-boxes are already filling and the press will be calling... Feel free to to ask the councillors yourselves:

  • For all traffic to turn left at the junction, these signs are quite wrong. These are to face vehicles actually at the junction e.g. on a r'bout. Signs here should be "Turn Left Ahead" signs (white left arrow on inverted "L" on blue bckgnd disc). Signs as shown are not enforceable – they instruct traffic to turn left in front of them, i.e. to collide with the wall!! Seems someone at Westminster's Highways Dept has a re-training need!! Fines (thefts?) taken should be refunded with costs!!

  • This is another example of theft by Westminster Council. It is no different to stealing from an OAP's hanbag, just because it is white collar theft should not make the act any less repulsive!

It is about time there was greater accountability by individuals at the council to the public. The tide is turning and I hope these robbing scrotes drown in that tide when it swamps up the staircase of Wastemonster Towers.

  • What we need is a revolution, it's coming and I can't wait.

  • @ShibariShamster Are any arrangements being made by Westminster CC to refund the fines that have been taken inappropriately? Is there any way in which the victims can be identified and advised that they have been ripped off so that they may reclaim the fines (and, it is hoped, their costs)?

  • am i wrong but i was under the impression that part of brewer street was closed for roadworks and this was the diversion route??
