With the thing at the back of the Sodor Bay Tug Boat, that is so you can attach a elastic band around it and then attach the elastic to the Sodor Bay Cargo Ship and then the Sodor Bay Tug Boat pulls the Sodor Bay Cargo Ship, hope this helps.

they put that thing on the back because it's a tug boat you could but some string on it a on another boat and tug it around

Btw the knob at the back was for attaching the tugboat to the sodom bay container ship. However learning curve never made an attaching device so the two ships have no official method of connecting. Great review on a very unique piece though.
