June 22, 2009: Two Metro transit trains collided at the height of the Monday evening rush hour, killing at least four people, including a female train operator, and severely injuring others as cars of one train jackknifed into the air and fell atop the other.

The mayor of Washington, D.C., confirmed the four dead. Mayor Adrian Fenty says that would make it the deadliest accident in the history of the Metro train system. According to an emergency rescue official, two other people have life-threatening injuries, and 70 people in all were hurt.

Rescue workers propped steel ladders up to the upper train cars to help survivors escape. Seats from the smashed cars had spilled out onto the track.

  • evean if the train driveir waas texting its not his fault because the train should have automaticley have stop

  • @sideslide23 idiot ATC Automatic Train Control.

  • @howardkevinm ATC? I didn't know that metro does Air Traffic Control for trains.

  • @sideslide23 the DC Metro has ATC system. the track controls the speed and movement of the entire train. the metrolink accident happened because the idiot was texting.

  • I got to Admit, the Publice Rail system in the United state is a P.O.S, because in L.A. they had a deadly train crash involving the Metro Link commuter rail, and the freight trains. and on July 5, Walt Disney World had a deadly train crash involving the two Monorail train.

  • Yes, Psfon. Just because of this, you shouldn't stop taking the metro.

  • I GOTTA TELL YA I WILL NEVER TAKE A SUBWAY TRAIN OR ANY TYPE OF T TRAIN....I c this happen in Boston every year almost....its scary... :/

  • Just because of this, it doesn't mean you should stop taking the metro. Your still safer on a metro than a car.

  • There's something wrong with the design of this car. Anti climbers R supposed to prevent this kind of thing( telescoping). What about the signaling system? It should hv stopped the train long before it hit the lead train. She was zipping along when she shouldn't hv been able to move at all.

  • Tragic.
