Acacia Park Skateboarding 1992-1996 ACP CHP:

Acacia Park was once a Skateboarding Mecca located in the center of downtown Colorado Springs. A place for well intentioned kids and blooming relationships, it saw the development of more than 300 Now Grown and successful individuals, who -- still -- skateboard everyday -- love their friends -- and continue to love the Old Acacia Park, if only by way of memory.
In 1998 the overly "Conservative Religious" city council had the skate-able concrete condemned for removal DUE to this enthusiastic gathering of teenagers, and in total disregard to the talents and positivity they displayed -- through -- skateboarding, at the heart of their tender growth. The ignorance of those in power not only destroyed the park's potential to further encourage that generation's talents, but also robbed future generations of area skateboarders their legacy: the celebrated Acacia Park tradition. This video is for all those who knew Acacia Park as it was.

Footage compiled and edited in 2001 by Nathan "Buttertooth" Lambert

  • @racoonsoup Hey great vid! music worked well, and the edits were clean! I wasn't here ten years ago to witness any of the issues with the park and skating, but I do think you are rather one sided on the whole. For instances in the vid a skater collided with a dog, nearly hit a bystander, and moved tables to suit the skaters needs. You can see why someone who is in charge of the parks general use would be interested in banning skating. There are plenty of other places to skate

  • And in fact the Memorial Skate Park is pretty epic wouldn't you agree? That is certainly a place where kids can get to know each other and hone their skills.

  • A sufficient Skate Park wasn't built for nearly Ten Years after - Skateboarders also brought huge revenue to the businesses of Downtown Colorado Springs.

  • Most Parents at that time were deeply disturbed by the hypocrisy of City Council. After decrying the drugs and crime of our young people, it then adopted legislation forbidding the one harmless thing that young people had developed strictly on their own, the wonderful national network of skateboarding focusing on ACACIA Park.

  • Acacia Park early to mid 90's. This video comes from my old tapes I gave Nate Lambert in 2002. I filmed most of it with my old crappy Canon Hi8 camera and a clip-on wide angle. -Travis

  • You made it happen Travis! "Lets see some more footage"..

  • i wish i had a time machine. now acacia is all druged & drunked out, and super ghetto. damn!!!

  • That was rad! But Acacia park isn't done, they tried to make it skate proof, but all they've succeeded in doing is making a larger gap for me to skate. Although those ledges looked like fun back in the day.

  • I love watching that video, brings back so many memories. I think there was only 1 skater I couldn't name. Just recently, I came across a bunch of photos from the old skatepark behind Independent Records, I honestly think those were the best days of my youth. I still think of you all the time Dominick.
