ohn Kelly was the son of a prosperous farmer and shop keeper in the village of Killan at the foothills of the Blackstairs Mountains. For his part in the rebellion he was executed on the old bridge at Wexford at the age of twenty five. His head was kicked by the yeomanry along the street under the very windows of the house where his sister had earlier tended wounds to his thigh which he incurred during the fighting.
The rising of 1798 was a daring event when one considers that the Irish were armed only with iron pikes and a handful of guns. The "Boys of Wexford" received little support from the rest of Ireland at the time , which prompted the ballad "The West's Asleep" some years later. Pitted against them was the might of English artillery. From the start the rebellion was doomed and it was only a matter of time before the Irish were overcome by the far superior armoury of the English.

(and yes I know some of these pictures doesn't fit wint 1798)

  • it is the only nationalist movement i like because they fought for their freedom and clearly rebel

    im againt nationalism

if i understood right if i want to live in ireland (im greek) IRA does not want it?

  • I think you are confused about the term nationalism, because nationalism is not national socialism (nazi). Nationalism is an idea that a people that share a culture and history together should have their own country.

And no, IRA does not have a trouble with you being greek, they are not racist.

  • what ideology has IRA? nazi?

because i tryied to find and i fount that it is a nationalist movement

and if it so then why has IRA the name republican???

  • Irish Republican Army. Yes a nationalistic military movement/organistation. Though they have laid the terror aside nowadays.

Though comparing it or even mention IRA+nazi is very bad, since they certianly wouldn't propegate a cleansing of the English & Protestant people on Ireland. They simply want Ireland to be united. And since Ireland today is populated by The Republic of Ireland and Northen Ireland, they support the Repulic, hence, republican.

  • The inspiration to the cause long passed down.

  • As a northern Irish prod. I bothered to look into the history of the country I'm proud to be from. I suggest the rest of my countrymen do and stop this ill founded unsubstantiated ignorant hatred of others and look at ourselves and stop hating and enjoy our fine culture!!!

  • I'm not saying there's no bigotry or abuse from the Irish side I'm just saying that the I.R.A. aren't racist and it's not I.R.A. you need to worry about if you happen to be coming to Northern Ireland from another country. As far as I know anyway, I'm ready to be proven wrong if there's evidence to the contrary.

  • @loyalprd How many innocents have been shot or blown up by the UVF/UDA doing an honest days work? What about the Irish kids who had withstand taunts and threats and abuse from *adults* just for walking to school?

  • @MajereRaistlinGR Google "UDA Combat 18", or "Orange Order KKK" if you want the real craic about fascism in Ulster.

  • @loyalprd But if you're an immigrant to Ulster from another country you are just as likely to get attacked by a Loyalist as has happened frequently in the past.

  • @MajereRaistlinGR

The IRA are fascists who target people because of their religion and their nationality Tey do not want want anyone to live in Northern Ireland who is not Irish, yet our familys have lived here for 800 years since the Normans. My uncle was murdered by these murdering pigs. Do not believe a word they say.

  • @1982CFD

What a load of crap. How many people have Sinn Fein IRA forced out their homes? How may innocents have been shot or blown up doing an honests days work? Women and children murdered, policemen shot, soldiers killed-because of their religion. Sounds like fascism to me! We cant even walk down the streets for fear of being targeted. There is no peace in Noirthern Ireland its all still going on behind the scenes
